See Dr. Chan’s talk on Saturday, November 8, 2014 at the 7th annual CLAM conference at the Confucius Institute at Wayne State University. The session is from 2:15 – 3:00 pm in ROOM F:

  • A Mobile App on Teaching and Learning Chinese Characters Based on Etymology

Ming Chan will end the session demonstrating how the iWrite Wenzi app leverages mobile touchpad technology, design and algorithms to provide an engaging digital user experience for the expedited learning using Dr. Chan’s etymology-based pedagogy.

Dr. Chan will speak briefly during lunch about how China is a text-based culture and as such, learning Chinese characters is not just important, but imperative for anyone who wishes to communicate or achieve literacy in Chinese.

Chinese Writing Systems will have a table on the main floor where you can demo the iWrite Wenzi iPad app. See how and why the app’s pedagogy, design and functions substantively speed up the rate of learning to write. Finally understand the logic and system of meaning upon which the Chinese writing system is based.

In his 2013 CLAM session, Dr. Chan presented the discoveries he made during his research at the Royal Ontario Museum in Toronto. He shared insights into how and why stroke order and direction was used in ancient bone script (jiaguwen) writing. more…
